Self-care for mamas, nurses, and other amazing heroines

Jennifer Schmid

Last week, I wrote that in my humble opinion, the number one similarity between moms and nurses is that we don’t take care of ourselves. We put everyone else in front of us and our own well-being. This works great for everybody else, until it doesn’t. I have learned the hard way over the years that self-care is the number one gift of love I can give not only to myself but to those whom I love – my kids, my partner, my friends and family, my colleagues and my patients.

Sometimes self-care means doing nice things for myself, like going to bed early, going for a hike, or soaking in the hot springs. These are all things that I can do on my own and don’t really require any guidance or support from anyone else.

However, I can get really shortsighted when it comes to my own health. I’ll admit that. If you’ve ever heard the expression Healer, Heal Thyself, I can tell you that most of us health care practitioners are pretty bad at healing ourselves. I am no exception. I’m really good at guiding people towards the products and people they need to get well and to get on the path to optimal health, but for myself? Yeah, not so good. And I’ve learned that the hard way.

This is not to say I haven’t tried many times to go it alone, but it has never served me. What I’ve found is that I do much better and am able to accomplish my goals when I have another expert guiding me. I’m also better able to stick to the plan when I have a group where we can cheer each other on and support each other. We are, after all, human beings who thrive on connection with one another.

Being led by an expert or two and being in a group are especially important when doing any type of cleanse or elimination diet. There is just too much darn temptation out there in the world with sugar, bread, pasta, really good wine and all sorts of salty, greasy, nutrient-less food options available that make it really hard to navigate healthy eating.

This is why I love the Warrior Cleanse.

I discovered The Warrior Cleanse in December when I was really struggling with my energy and health. I work long hours, as both a mom and a nurse, and the more tired I get, the worse choices I am apt to make when it comes to food. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t run to McDonald’s or Taco Bell, but I do tend to eat too much sugar, too much bread, and too few greens and veggies. I start drinking coffee, and then I quickly become dependent and can’t stop.

There are a lot of things I love about The Warrior Cleanse. I love that it comes with a 100 page cookbook of accessible, easy, and delicious recipes. I love that it comes with healthy alternatives to yummy comfort foods like mocha lattes, French fries, and chocolate pudding.

I love how I don’t feel like I’m depriving myself and that I can eat basically as much as I want because I have so many healthy choices of nourishing foods for my body and soul. I don’t ever feel like I’m starving.

I love the way I’m guided by two really fantastic nutrition and fitness experts, Diane Kazer and Lunden Sousa. Diane created The Warrior Cleanse because of her own health issues, Lunden found Diane and cleared up her own health issues, and now they work together to support women like us.

I love how there’s a group of people from around the world doing the cleanse with me and supporting each other, cheering each other and finding a safe space to be really vulnerable. We women carry a lot of shame around our bodies, but in The Warrior Cleanse, we get to check our shame at the door and be who we are in all of our perfect, radiant beauty (even when we don’t feel beautiful).

What impressed me most about The Warrior Cleanse was that in less than one week into the cleanse, I was able to clear up a health issue that I had been trying to deal with for 9 years. It dogged me. I tried everything, from purification programs to herbs to supplements to energy work to chiropractic… nothing made a difference in balancing my hormones until I did The Warrior Cleanse.

As I said, being an expert for others doesn’t always translate into being an expert for myself. I don’t go it alone anymore.

We’re going to be starting another Warrior Cleanse on April 15. I really hope you will join me. Not only do you get access to a very extensive cookbook, support group and detox supplements, you will feel better. You will have more energy. The people in your life will tell you that you seem different and have a glow.

And yes, even my teenagers like the recipes. They also appreciate that I am doing something for my own health and well-being so that I have more bandwidth for them, more love to give them, and will hopefully be around a long time to watch them grow into adults with lives of their own.

The best part about doing The Warrior Cleanse starting on April 8 is that you get access not only to Diane and Lunden, you also get access to me. I’ll be there to coach you along, help you determine what supplements to take while on the cleanse, and we can even set up a free call during the cleanse in case you need some individual guidance and support.

Here’s the deal. I want us all to feel amazing. I want us all to feel luminous and radiant like the incredible women that we are while navigating a very challenging world. You’ll likely spend hours cleaning up your home this spring; now is the perfect time to clean up your temple.
