Self-care for mamas, nurses, and other amazing heroines

Jennifer Schmid

I can get really shortsighted when it comes to my own health. I’ll admit that. If you’ve ever heard the expression Healer, Heal Thyself, I can tell you that most of us health care practitioners are pretty bad at healing ourselves. I am no exception. I’m really good at guiding people towards the products and people they need to get well and to get on the path to optimal health, but for myself? Yeah, not so good. And I’ve learned that the hard way.

This is not to say I haven’t tried many times to go it alone, but it has never served me. What I’ve found is that I do much better and am able to accomplish my goals when I have another expert guiding me. I’m also better able to stick to the plan when I have a group where we can cheer each other on and support each other. We are, after all, human beings who thrive on connection with one another.

The Number One Similarity between Moms and Nurses (and why this needs to change)

Jennifer Schmid

I’ve noticed over the years that there are lots of similarities between moms and nurses.

Both are caring and nurturing. Both rely on a gentle touch to bring warmth and comfort. Both want to minimize suffering, whether from a skinned knee, school bully, cancer, or complicated surgery.

Podcast #14 --> Self-Care: Creating Sanity amidst the Chaos

Jennifer Schmid

It might only be March, but so far 2017 has been a doozy.

Now more than ever, self-care is critical for our health and well-being.

You may have noticed that I have been very quiet over the last few months, not having published any blogs or newsletters or recording any podcasts. This is because in all the chaos, I had to create space for self-care.  I knew I was only going to make things worse for myself if I was sick, stressed out, and exhausted.

Here are the eight steps I’ve taken this winter to take care of myself, to put on my proverbial oxygen mask. I hope that they serve as a springboard of inspiration for you so that you can take a few steps towards creating sanity in your own chaotic world.

Creating Time, Finding Freedom

Jennifer Schmid

Today, I’m going to give you some strategies to overcome the #1 obstacle that people face in getting healthy: TIME.

Time is the #1 obstacle.

“I don’t have time to exercise.”

“I don’t have time to get enough sleep.”

“I don’t have time to go grocery shopping for healthy food.”

“I don’t have time to cook healthy food.”

You get the idea.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret, a secret that truly changed my life. It’s a paradox, but once you understand it, you’ll realize that this dastardly obstacle called not-enough-time is really a myth.

Setting the self-care example for our patients

JPW Design Team

How many people do you know who suppress their need to rejuvenate, who pick themselves up in the morning with their Starbucks grande and numb themselves in the evening with wine, beer, or whiskey? How many nurses and doctors do you know who are hooked on coffee, junk food, and Diet Coke to get through their long shifts? As a patient, how does it make you feel when you meet your doctor/nurse/practitioner for the first time, and they’re 50 pounds overweight, with big, dark circles under their eyes, and they too tired to greet you with a smile?
